  • 3me (Area)

    Contribute to a robot that fights food waste, develop autonomous ships or help develop custom 3D-printed artificial organs. You will learn this at one of the three bachelor studies Mechanical Engineering, Maritime Engineering or Clinical Technology. The focus is on improving the world by making use of technical solutions that are both sustainable and safe.

  • Four elements (Point)

    The four statues were placed on the 3mE facade in 1955 and represent the four elements: water, fire, earth and air. The elements are the foundation upon which the studies mechanical engineering and maritime engineering are based.  

  • Statue of prometheus (Point)

    Prometheus is a Greek mythological figure who stole the fire from the gods and gave it to the people. Prometheus taught humanity to process metal with the aid of fire and was therefore known as the very first teacher in art. First there was a bronze statue on this spot which was stolen in 2012. Therefore, the new statue is a cutout of Prometheus as a hole to represent the void left by the theft.

    A wall painting that represents a crane. The crane characterized de study Mechanical Engineering. The work is painted by the artist Jan Brons.

  • Artwork (Point)

    A black and white natural stone intarsia has been installed in the hall of 3mE. The artist of this is Karel Appel. It represents a propeller which symbolizes the study Maritime Engineering.

  • Walk-in workshop (Point)

    In the Walk-in Workshop (IWS), students can make models of metal and plastic on the available equipment. IWS also teaches the use of simple metal working equipment, turning and milling.

  • Vehicle lab (Point)

    Intelligent Vehicles is a research area that focuses on making vehicles smarter. A vehicle sees with sensors, through some systems these observations must be converted into intelligent choices. Those systems are used in the future of autonomous driving

  • Mechanical lab (Point)

    The Department of Material Science and Engineering (MSE) conducts innovative research into the production, characterization and manipulation of materials, with an emphasis on metals. With the aim of sustainably developing materials that perform better, last longer, improve functionality, conserve resources and have a low ecological footprint. In this lab, the focus is also on steel.

  • Offshore constructio... ... (Point)

    In addition to normal model ships, offshore constructions can also be tested in the towing tank. The construction is placed in the water, and after the interaction with waves is tested. This model is therefore not towed through the water like normal vessels.

  • Towing carriage (Point)

    In the towing tank, various models are towed through the water by means of the towing truck to perform tests. The towing tank has a length of 142 meters and has a capacity of 1.5 million liter of water. A towing carriage, which is a platform full of measuring equipment, drives over the tank. The model which is tested is hangs in the middle of the towing truck.

  • Lemsteraak (Point)

    Here you can see a model of a “Lemsteraak”. This is a traditional Frisian sailing ship, the design comes from the village of Lemmer. It is very suitable for the Frisian inland waterways.

  • Sailing yacht (Point)

    The models are built by hand. The designer starts with sticking several thick plates of wood together and models the outer hull with a special cutter. This cutter is linked to a drawing arm with which it traces the lines of the line plan. The cutter follows the movements and scrapes the model left and right simultaneously. After this, the outside is sanded and painted, and the model can be put into the water. Here you can see the model of a sailing yacht.

  • Daniel bernoulli (Point)

    Daniel Bernoulli (1700-1782) is a famous physicist. His most famous work is named after him, the Bernoulli’s law. This law relates pressure differences inside currents on height and speed differences. A good example of this law is a dam. The pressure before the dam is low, but the water that is injected into the generators is high, this is due to the height difference described by Bernoulli. One of the lecture halls is now named after Bernoulli.

  • Isaac newton (Point)

    Isaac Newton (1643-1723) is the most famous physicist ever existed. His masterpiece is describing gravity and the foundation of the classical mechanics by the three laws named after him, the three laws of Newton. All contemporary mechanical movements are still described by those three laws of Newton. Due to this big impact caused by Newton a lecture hall is named after him.

  • Design contest (Point)

    All first year mechanical engineering students have a big design contest in the second half of the academic year. All groups get the same assignment and sometimes you compete up to 70 other groups. First you go through the whole design process but eventually a physical concept must be produced. The assignment will eventually be carried out with all groups at the “Grote markt” in Delft, after which there will be a winner. An example of an assignment that was once done is the design of a container handler.

  • Current research (Point)

    Current research that is currently being done here is the interaction between self-driving vehicles and crossing pedestrians. Software is being developed that is able to predict the behavior of pedestrians. If a pedestrian has seen the vehicle, the vehicle can continue as usual. If the pedestrian has not seen the car, it will have to divert.

  • Impact test machine (Point)

    Small test objects are loaded into the machine, whereafter the machine runs automatically. It loads the object at the test position, after this a hammer will collide with the test object with a pre-defined amount of energy. As a result the object will break and by measuring the angle the hammer makes, the amount of energy absorbed by the object can be determined. The object is removed by a conveyer belt and a new object is placed automatically.
