DETAILS
The church of st. ni... ... (Area)
The Church of St. Nicolas is located on the western side of the Berat castle, near Saint Mary Blaherna. The church dates back to the end of the 16th century, according to the inscription found on the north gate. However, the monument seems to have an earlier phase. The church has a rectangular plan on the sides of which there are two remains of ruined paralixes, and is composed by the naos, the altar alcove and the trihedral apse. The naos comes today as a simple construction, typical of the post-Byzantine period, where the wall with horizontal wooden bands predominates. What is special about this monument is the presence of two architectural elements from the Paleo-Christian period - a column and a capital - reused as an altar. In 1591, the interior of the church was painted by Onufër Cyprioti. The mural painting is still preserved in the northern and southern parts, while in the space of the apse is much damaged and the Bible scenes cannot be distinguished.
(Point)
Starting from the bottom, the saints in real dimensions, in the middle, with their medallions, and in the upper part, various biblical scenes, where the "Baptism of Christ" can be easily distinguished.
(Point)
Starting from the bottom, from left to right, there are: the archangel Michael, two strategists of the Byzantine army, a saint with a book in his hand, and finally, in part of the altar, is the "sale" scene, which is partially damaged.
