Kisha e Shën Gjergjit Berat

DETAILS

  • The church of saint... ... (Area)

The church of Saint George is located on the south-eastern side of the Berat castle and currently preserves very little of its original construction from the 18th century. Its previous architecture can be seen in a black-and-white photo by the LUCE agency, during the 40s of the last centuries. It seems to have been a monastery, surrounded by stone walls and the main entrance from the west, with an important architectural element such as the bell tower. The church stood out for its height and size. Its planimetric was rectangular and on the western side there was also a portico with a stone colonnade. But in the 80s, the monument was transformed into a government residence and tourist point, which also led to the destruction of the upper part of the church, to imitate the traditional houses of the city. From the traces that are still preserved today, the original walls can be seen on the ground floor with the use of brick bands, combined with stones.
